Broadbent earns cross-border victory

Sutton u7 Rascals 1

What a difference a week makes!

Right from the off Sutton were into their stride – passing, moving and closing down quickly.
The defensive combination of Matthew Akrigg, Sam Benson and Addison Willis provided steady assurance for the team with the midfield of Aidan Lee, Daniel Mason, Stan Lloyd and William Bell exerting good pressure on the East Lancashire team, who were trying to out-muscle the smaller Sutton team, without much success.
A clever through ball from Mason created an one-on-one for Matthew Broadbent only for the keeper to save well.
After the break it really was all Sutton with clever passing, movement and dribbling.
Fine efforts from Lee and Mason were both cleared off the line.
The breakthrough finally came when a marauding run down the left wing from Lee and a pinpoint cross was converted by Broadbent, full stretch, on the volley. It was a fantastic goal to cap a superb display.

The second game provided further opportunity for Sutton to show their strength in depth.
Flynn Weller and William Bell typified the work ethic of the whole team with their boundless energy and commitment to run, dribble and close down.
Joe Beck and Matthew Akrigg both went close on numerous occasions with fine efforts.
Continuing improvement from Tommy Davis in his second game and an assured debut from Callum Filkin saw the boys through to the end of the game with a much deserved share of the spoils although in the final few minutes constant pressure on the Barnoldswick goal nearly earned Sutton a win.
Player of the Day was Sam Benson for a great display and orchestrating many of the Sutton attacks in the first game although every single player was outstanding.
